If you have been conducting commercial mapping or security operations near shipping ports or industrial corridors, your preflight routine just got a bit more complicated. A series of temporary airspace adjustments has quietly altered the automatic approval grid heights for Class D airspace surrounding major ports.

The Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC) system is a pilot's best friend, but when the underlying grids shift without warning, automatic approvals can turn into bureaucratic roadblocks.

Understanding the Grid Adjustments

The FAA coordinates with local airport traffic control towers to establish the UAS Facility Maps (UASFM). These maps divide the airspace into grid squares, each with a designated altitude ceiling (ranging from 0 to 400 feet) indicating where automatic approvals are permitted. To accommodate increased commercial helicopter activity and high-mast shipping container cranes, the FAA has temporarily lowered the automated ceilings in select shipping corridors.

For example, several grids that previously allowed automatic approvals up to 150 feet have been capped at 50 feet. If your mission profile requires flying at 100 feet in these grids, the system will immediately reject your request, forcing you to submit a manual authorization request.

A manual review request bypasses the automatic system and goes directly to local air traffic controllers, but these reviews can take up to 30 days. For an operator with a client waiting on survey data, a 30-day delay is a commercial disaster.
