Ray Richardson is the Founder, Publisher, and Editor-in-Chief of The Drone Pilot Brief. As a certified FAA Part 107 commercial remote pilot and former traditional aviation systems editor, Ray has spent over a decade bridging the gap between hardware telemetry, public airspace policy, and field operations.
Operational Focus & Experience
Ray’s aviation career began in traditional journalism, covering avionics suites and regulatory compliance for municipal flight operations. With the rapid evolution of small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS), he transitioned full-time into autonomous aerial workflows. Ray has logged hundreds of flight hours across diverse industrial applications, including:
- GIS Mapping & Infrastructure Auditing: Processing high-density photogrammetry and LiDAR data for civil engineering stockpiles and cell tower scans.
- UAS Fleet Coordination: Implementing flight safety management systems (SMS) and standard operating procedures for regional drone operations.
- Regulatory Navigation: Advising logistics teams on Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) waiver requirements under FAA Part 107/108 and EASA SAIL frameworks.

Through The Drone Pilot Brief, Ray's mission is to move past the superficial marketing fluff and provide drone operators, flight coordinators, and operations managers with the raw, technical, and compliance-first analysis they need to run safe, profitable fleets. Ray believes that a drone is not just a camera, but an edge data collection terminal that requires strict standards, flight compliance, and precise data security controls.
